2013 Christmas projects

Another one bites the dust. Just finished this Point presser/clapper for my daughter. She sews most of her own clothes. This tool is used for pressing seams in dressmaking/tailoring.

Finish? Well 'tamed' grain!

No washer/dryer planned. I made this one smaller than the plans, 20" high x 16" wide so I could use 1x8 for the doors. I liked the grain on the board I used for the doors, I rotated the piece for the second door to give a pseudo book matched look.

The finish is three coats of WATCO Lacquer Clear Wood Finish .

You never can tell where those crafty little critters will turn up.

This was made from an unknown hardwood I rescued from a pallet. No finish, but I sanded it to 400 grit with my new random orbit sander. Very smooth.

Inspired by WWMM and woodgears.ca. I made a bunch of whistles for extended family. This photo shows nearly complete. Red oak for the center (left over from building my son's crib a few years ago), bloodwood for the sides (was hardwood floor that had nails blow out on the tounges).

Update on the doll armoire. The hangers available locally were too small to fit properly.

I got the wire from Canadian Tire , but I think any hardware/big box store should have it.

I don't think 14 gauge would be strong enough for a full sized hanger.

For the jig I used 3/4" dowel, 3/4" pvc pipe (just over 1" od., I cut a slot so it would fit in a 1" hole.), and roll pins. The jig pictured was the fourth iteration. It took a bit of fine tuning to get the roll pins in the right spots.

Slowly clearing the backlog.

Inspired by one of Heath's projects, Heathicus - Dice Tower, I made this dice tower for my daughters partner (son outlaw?).

The tower is 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 /x 6 1/2, oak (salvaged from a pallet), finished with Deft - Danish Oil Finish.

Just one belated Christmas present to go now, a firewood box. will post when finished.

I guess this qualifies as a Christmas project. When we were at our son and daughter-in-law's home Thanksgiving/Christmas I found one's vision while watching their TV was obstructed by the sound bar that ran across the front. Their flat screen sits on a coffee table against a wall. They both were bothered by it too, but needed the right stand to put the flat screen on and hadn't found anything that worked well or wasn't highly priced. So, when I got home I made the following stand.

Although it's just a box, it was a good exercise in basic woodworking skills. I used a high quality pine. I know from experience that 1/2" stock looks better than 3/4" and makes a better looking dovetail. So I used my SS planer to plane the stock. I left the top 3/4" thick after biscuit joining two boards using my SS biscuit cutter. I then cut a rabbit 3/8" by 1/2" deep on all the edges of the top to fit into the sides creating a lid. No bottom was needed, although I lined the edges with felt to protect their coffee table.

The box was sealed with shellack then painted to match their coffee table in gloss black (using a latex enamel). The box is 22" long x7.5" high x12" deep.
