Free motor refurb, rewire, reversal.

Here is Fred's motor from SS # 158410:

General Electric 1 & 1/8th hp motor.
Insulation on the wiring is crumbling (will be replaced anyway).
Bearings are a little noisy when rotated by hand, but not grinding.

Here is E. Artigas's motor:

A O Smith 1 & 1/8th hp.
Bearing seem ok when rotated by hand except for a small scraping noise (might be styrofoam rubbing inside).

EDIT: Forgot to mention... Someone else has been into this motor already, as seen by the alignment marks on the case in picture 2.

Here is Jerry's motor (1 of 2) from SS # 345558.

General Electric 3/4 hp motor.

The following is written on the motor pan in pencil:
" # - red
# 5 - white"

Power cord is frayed and showing bare wires. Also, just 2 prong (no ground wire).

Headstock and motor are packed with sawdust.

Bearings are extremely noisy when rotated by hand and are dragging badly.

Here is Jerry's motor (2 of 2) from SS #284866

Franklin Electric 3/4 hp (damn this thing is huge...)

Power cord is new but seems small (16 gauge wire?)

Someone went to town with sheet metal screw (I removed 12 holding on the belt cover and motor pan).

Headstock and motor are packed with sawdust. The quill will not retract, but I really didn't try.

The bearings grind and drag when rotated by hand. Not as bad as Jerry's GE motor, but...

Now who would send such ugly stuff up to be worked on ? I mean really. Must not have any pride at all. How embarrassing !!! Josh you are one hell of a guy to take on such crap and make it pretty. You asked for a challenge and here it is. Let's just say if you get those two motors up and running and put back together you win my vote for future work. I know it s more then you bargained for, but if anyone can do it you can. Sorry about the ITCH it sounds bad much alone uncomfortable. Thanks for the update and pictures.

That retaining ring will be easy to remove. Now the cup on the other hand. . . .

Beware that nut(lh thread). Compression of spring a challenge. Especially at reassembly time!:D

Oh the motors will be just fine I think, but I don't know that I want to tackle rebuilding the two headstocks you sent with 'em. We'll see. Time is a rare commodity for me.

Re reversing the motor with the nut securing the spring. Be sure to use blue loc-tite on the nut/motor shaft threads. A better 'solution' would be to pin it.

It was made with a left hand thread for a reason. Guess what running in reverse can cause!;)

Please verify the size of the Franklin motor bearings when you take them out. All we have at present is word of mouth from god knows where.

I am guilty but actually I just only added the black pad outside and the cardboard box. the cooler adaptation came from the Ebay seller who I bought it from more than a year ago.
