Here's the update. Went to UPS today. Shipped my headstock to Shopsmith for PowerPro upgrade. Insured my headstock for $1200 (could have done more, could have done less). I used a box I had received several years ago from Shopsmith. So, it had packaging materials, etc. Package will arrive in Dayton tomorrow afternoon. Paid UPS $38.44. My return shipping and handling will be $140.54. Whatever the case, there is money being made in S&H.

How much did it cost then?;)

I guess we can always find stuff to bitch about! I still bitch about candy bars going for $1+ when they are smaller than the ones I used to buy for a nickel.

Shopsmith's shipping and Handling charges are certainly not directly related to size and weight. I just looked through a group of past documents and find that $8.49 is a frequent charge.

However, I can make no sense of why they are what they are.

These charges cannot be compared to Amazon. Amazon has a big business machine working for them that radically distorts their shipping costs. About half of what I buy via Amazon gets shipped with no shipping charges.

Yup. Salted Nut Roll or a Heath Bar - $.05.

Saturday morning movies for a quarter with popcorn and coke for $.10 ea; that's my complaint.

Deposit on coke bottles was $.03. I could collect enough coke bottles out of the trash to go to the movies each week.

A couple years later - I was a "paper boy". The weekly news paper, delivered daily to your front door, cost $1.10. That included the Saturday and Sunday editions - both of which were stuffed with business fliers.

My bag full of Sunday papers (strapped to the handle bars on my Swinn bicycle) weighed about as much as I did. I really disliked my job on Sunday morning - until I got down close to the end of the route. I delivered to a small mom and pop cafe. If I got there before 6:00am I was treated with a cup of hot chocolate and a short stack of pancakes (no charge) - that was the deal.

I don't think I ever paid for hot chocolate and pan cakes - even when late.

Weight and Size

Post by onevw »

YES

When things are heavy 40 plus lbs and small enough a person to grasp with two hands these get treated very ruff, pushed of tables, docks, movement systems etc.

This size/weight package is also going to be tossed all over the place by ups and fedx employees. USPS way to lazy to use the energy needed to throw that kind of weight around.

So when this weight suddenly stops the energy stored in the stuff inside the box and any components in the stuff will just keep going and may destroy itself. So I think high cost of extra packing (with in reason) is worth it for this kine of stuff.

But completely out of line when the stuff is small has little weight.
