As far as the rubber ring, for which I believe the proper technical name is "thingy"
it is just one more place where the old Mark VII had received an improvement... Just slide the carriage over and latch.

The way to prevent that damage is to get the headspace functioning correctly.freedomlives wrote:So that's what the stop ring is! I thought it was that rubbery piece around the quill! I need to find some 50mm hose then and make one, at least for that security purpose of preventing damage on a headstock crash-- something I'm bound to do sometime...

Re: Carriage Stop Ring, & Blade "Zero"
This is an old thread but thought I would share my new carriage rings based off of JPG's suggestion to use a 1.5" PVC coupler cut down to size. I used 2" PVC and it turned out nicely with some 1/4" felt pads I had lying around. Not too loose and Not too snug, Just Right.

I have the rubber carriage ring, but always felt it was a bit inaccurate since it is somewhat pliable so felt the PVC rings on both way tubes might allow a little more precise repeatability in terms of setting the blade in the same spot every time.
We'll see if it works.
Cheers,
John

Re: Carriage Stop Ring, & Blade "Zero"
The 'original' Mark 5 carriage stop ring was hard plastic. I do not consider the rubber replacement an improvement nor a 'head crash' preventer.

Re: Carriage Stop Ring, & Blade "Zero"
Didn't want to start up the debate again on the whether the carriage ring helped prevent "head crash" issues.
Just wanted to share based off of your previous share of the PVC rings.
I imagine anything there that is not hard metal is better than nothing at all in the event of a slippage event or carriage lock mind slip.
Cheers,
John

It simply is inadequate.
