Inkscape Issue

Post by berry »

I've recently downloaded Inkscape (an open source vector drawing program) and I am following the tutorials on YouTube.

I'm running Windows 7 - 64bit. The boarder around the work area, where all the tools are, dialog boxes etc is a dark gray with precious little contrast. With my old eyes I'm having a problem seeing the icons. On the tutorials the tools area is almost a white background. (I tried to upload a screen capture but I don't know how to reduce the size required here  )

So does anyone know how to change this? I'd be eternally grateful.

If the resizing of the screen capture is the question, try this:
1. 'print screen'
2. open PAINT
3. Paste
4. 'Resize'
5. select Pixels, choose Hor=600 (or 800)
6. Save
{maybe choose an altered file name like ___small}

Try this: go to

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool

Select this and click on NEW. This allows you to select only that area that you want. Then save it.

Next (of First) download Image Resizer - http://imageresizer.codeplex.com/

The details are straightforward. Windows XP had this built in but Win 7 does not so you will need to add this.

or you can download and use such free programs as POS Photo Editor (don't accept their upgrades to a newer version. You can easily crop and re-size photos with this program. It is intuitive and resizing is found under Options.

I recommend the Resizer download and Snipit Tool from MS. If you use this often you may want to install the Snipit tool in your task bar.

Today I installed Inkscape on -

my desktop computer running Ubuntu Linux - the tool bar is a very pale grey (almost white)

my notebook computer running Windows 7 starter - the tool bar is a darker grey.

I can't find anywhere in Inkscape to change the colour scheme.

The solution is to change the Theme in Windows.

Right click on the desktop
in the popup menu click on Personalize
Click on Window Color
Click on Advanced
Click on the right edge of the Item scroll bar to open
Click on 3D Objects
Click on Color 1
pick the color you want from the pop up palette (click other for more choices)
Click OK
Click Apply
Click OK

Way cool! I tried the Snippit and it's easier than a screen capture evun.
...then open Paint ('cause it's already there, free, easy and fast) and do the rest (Paste, etc.).

Thanks for the "new tool"!

inkscape screen capture

Post by berry »

So here is a screen capture (resized for the SS forum).

Ron, I tried that process you suggested but unfortunately it didn't change the background?

I appreciate everyone trying to help. I guess if I'd learn all the keyboard shortcuts I could forget looking at icons.

Wow that is dark. What theme are you using? I noted on the advanced page it says "Colors and sizes selected here might not apply if you select the Windows 7 Standard or Basic color schemes.". Try selecting the Windows Classic theme first, that worked for me.

I tried a couple of different themes just now, but they don't have any effect on the Inkscape background in the tool area. Maybe I should tried uninstalling and reinstalling?
