3" and 6" shopsmith faceplates, a little help please
I have the AL versions of these faceplates, all from 1976 to maybe later/earlier versions. I'm looking at the 5/8" hole that is used to mount them with and found that the hole is not a 5/8" through hole. When I put a 5/8" shaft it stops short of the actual faceplate surface. It is not much short but still short.
I'm thinking this might have been either a design intent so the shaft can never get through enough to effect a good mount or .... was I just lucky enough to have gotten a batch that were never bored though.
I'm looking to have an adapter made and I would like to know if that feature is on most/all shopsmith faceplates or what. Could a few of you check yours and get back to me?

Both of my face plates have through holes. But I don't see where it wood make much difference as long as it fits in the spindle okay. Mine are from 1980.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Is the bore depth >= the quill shaft length?

You must be lucky. I checked my aluminum and cast iron 3-3/4 faceplates and my two 6" cast iron faceplates (one from my ER and a newer one); all of them are through bored......no ridge.reible wrote:I have the AL versions of these faceplates, all from 1976 to maybe later/earlier versions. I thought I would check on this since my shop is close at hand. At first I couldn't find them but then I happened to look over where they belonged and there they were.
I don't know how that happened.
Both the large face-plate and the small one are bored through fully. They are from 1988.

Now with the responses I have seen I'm beginning to wonder if I'm getting the information I'm looking for or if I really am special.
So lets try this again. The hole does go through the faceplate. It is a 5/8" hole where it attaches to the shopsmith BUT the flat faceplate end is smaller then 5/8". It will not slide on the shopsmith shaft backwards. A 5/8" shaft will not slide through the faceplate.
I have since checked my total collection minus the ones residing 400 miles north of here and they all have this same "feature"
Now no body is that lucky to have the collection I have all made the same way and not have other with the same.
I'm attaching a photo of my 3" face plate with a 5/8" shaft inserted until it stops. I'd say it is nearly a 1/16" short of the faceplate on average.

You have to either feel the ridge just on the edge of the flat or try to mount it on a shopsmith backwards or use a 5/8" shaft to verify. Just looking at will most likely not "see" the ridge or issue.
I can't get to the ci versions which came with my 10er for a few days yet. The others are all AL, two of which came with my 1976 shopsmith. The other have came from previous owners so I can only guess at the ages....
So please read this and take a second look.
I'm sending preliminary information out to tonight for an estimate but will need to follow up within a few days if it is excepted as a project. Small detail but then they are all small details.
