Anyway as you can see in the picture I turned out a travel mug using a solid block of 4x4 purple heart. It's by no means perfect. I had trouble keeping it in the chuck in the early stages and turned down the outside a little too far to get it round. Then I had to cut the mouth pretty thin as a result, so I could fit the insert in. There's a small gap between the lip of the insert and the wood and a couple cracks from getting to thin, but I think I can recover with some epoxy, sawdust and Elmer's glue. For now it's finished with Minwax and mineral oil.
A good learning experience for certain. My other projects have been a long spindle from red oak just for sh**s & giggles
