tablets

Post by ryanbp01 »

Today, I'm trying something new. For Christmas, I received Barnes and Noble gift cards. Wasn't too sure what to spend them on so I bought a Nook. This is the first time I've used it in such a manner. How many of you use a tablet for a similar use or for woodworking plans in the shop?

90% of my SS Forums browsing is done on my iPad. I have all available electronic manuals for my shop equipment salted away in Dropbox, where I can access them from the iPad. It's rare that I bother to pull out the paper manuals.

It makes a handy calculator while in the shop. I keep my tool-shopping list and hobby/honey-do list on it as well. Not to mention woodworking e-books.

My general rule of thumb these days: PC's are for work and for doing bills, tablets are for leisure. At least that's how it has worked out for me.

I use a PC all day at work. At home, I rarely touch my PC anymore. I do everything with my Android tablet and smart phone. My PC currently runs Ubuntu and mostly served as a file server. I just built a dedicated storage server and moved all the files to that so I'm going to put Windows back on the PC for my wife's use in her home schooling of our youngest kids. I just don't need it anymore now that I have the tablet. The only thing I can't do on the tablet is Sketchup so will still use the PC for that, or when I have a lot I want to type in a hurry and prefer a real keyboard.

I am currently looking for a way to use my Android tablet as a display for my Android smart phone... Not to use the tablet for anything involved, just so I can have a bigger screen for using my phone which is unlimited but the screen is a bit small...
I have not found any way yet but I keep looking. :)

I have an ancient iMac G3 running OS-X that I normally keep in the woodshop.

Farmer, check out Airdroid (it's in the play store). Probably not exactly what you want, but might work for a few tasks. Install it on your phone, then use your tablet (or computer) to log in to a web page served from the software on the phone. You can send and receive text messages, manage files, access the camera, take a screen shot, and a lot else. There's also "3CX Droid Desktop" that looks similar, but I haven't used it.
