More likely bronze so it has some springiness, or maybe brass plated steel.

Yes it is a ring, but is not fully closed. As it is inserted into the bore, the ends of the ring move closer towards each other. It exerts force against the bore as it tries to open back up. Anything that will 'fit' and act like that should work.

If one never lifts it off the floor, it will not fall out anyway.;)
