Are there other/cheaper/better drill chucks for the Shopsmith?

Hi all,

I just found out the hard way (snapped bit) that my used Ebay drill bit chuck is not true and has a wobble to it. I looked up a new Jacobs chuck on the Shopsmith webpage and it's $40 plus $9 shipping plus 6% PA sales tax. Are there other less expensive chuck alternatives that would fit on the 5/8" arbor? Or looking at it from a different angle, are there alternatives at the same/slightly higher price which would would be an upgrade over the Shopsmith chuck?

It's not a good idea to save $ on drill chucks and drill bits!!!!!

Charlese, I completely agree! To clarify, I am not trying to go "cheap." Instead, I am looking to either get something of the same quality but at a better price, or looking to get something nicer for perhaps the same or a little more. I saw a bunch of different chucks on the Jacobs page:

Are 5/8" arbor-mounted chucks a standardized thing?

I really don't know! Since I drive a Shopsmith, I just go to them for parts, knowing they will stand behind them. I may be paying more, but I'm not spending time shopping! And I know I'm not buying junk! If I need a part and can't find it quickly on their web site, I'll call them.

I have compared Shopsmith's prices for things of the extra add-on nature (clamps and the like) and find them comparable with others for the same item. Then I quit comparing!

There is one Shopsmith SPT that I feel costs too much compared with the market prices of others, but that is the exception. Since woodworking is my main hobby, and Shopsmith is my main power tool, and I want to keep on cutting, I just don't do any serious delving into what other's offer, just go to the source.

As of yet, repair parts don't come close to the cost of wood processed!

I have been using the 10ER drill chucks which are longer, heavier, bigger and bigger chuck key. They just seems to be better built and prettier than the 60, 70, 80, 90 drill chucks. I brought my first 3 10ERs just for the drill chucks and they say Shopsmith on the drill chuck. I still have them if interested.
