In 1963 I was still just wishing and trying to make "anything" round using my drill in a bench mount with a cobbled together tailstock and tool support. :(
About 1965 I bought one of those AMT $9.95 lathes they advertised on the back of Popular Mechanics magazine. I was still making crude turning chisels out of big old screwdrivers. Chuck? What's a chuck? :( :) It all had to be between centers. Still... I was turning, sort of...
Then I got into the wonderful world of early data processing and for a number of years I didn't have time to turn around let alone turn wood... :(
When I finally bought my 510 new in 1988 that was my first decent lathe. I had found a couple of other very disappointing old relics that were barely functional so when I got the 510 it was another world. Now I have a bunch of them and still can't get the time to use them. I have promised my self to do a little turning this spring.

Hmmm, 1963. Just months after the Cuban Crisis. I was much too preoccupied to be thinking lathe or wood turning. I was on a mountain top, maintaining radar early warning systems and wondering what Russia was going to do next.

What am I doing now some 50 years later? Wondering what Russia is going to do next. The big difference now. I am too old to be sent somewhere other than where I am right now to do something about it. I don't know if that is good or bad.

BTW...I have some old chisels but I don't know how to tell whether they are some of these or not. Do these have any distinguishing markings?
