Did you consider resawing your stock with the bandsaw and then planing to final dimension?
I did. But the width of most of the pieces that make up the drawers are wider than what the SS band saw can handle.

Hey Lucky

Bill, you were extremely lucky. I hope you went out and bought a lottery ticket that evening. You should have won. The chest of drawers really look good. I bet the rest will also. thanks BELLHEAD

Bed

Post by dan1999 »

Bill, I thought about doing the set once I saw your version, but I made a few changes along the way, I made my set in cherry, the bed has 2 drawers on each side and the night tables have 3 drawers in each. The drawers are 1/2" Baltic birch(Russian plywood, and cannot put the finish on until spring just too cold. Am glad that I got the inspiration from you to do this project. Figure by the end of it I will have made 2 beds 3 dressers and 4 night tables.

My project is also on hold waiting for warmer weather. I have a dresser, 2 nightstands, a footboard, and the bed rails yet to stain and topcoat. Shouldn't be too much longer.

What bed rail brackets did you use? Our bed is a king and I am still looking to find the most heavy-duty bracket available.

I would like to see a picture of the bed with drawers. It sounds like a nice addition.

Cherry Bed

Post by dan1999 »

I did not use the strips that they suggested (lats) I made a center post running from top to bottom attached to the headboard and footboard (hardware from lee valley 00s17.10) the board was 7/8 thick and 4 inches wide and had a large t shaped support running the same direction as the center support. Each of the posts and the center support have 1 1/4 glides so I can raise or lower the bed to the height of the floor for full contact at all points. Then I ran four pieces of plywood sectioned so that I could add the drawers like modular units and added the face fronts to the drawers. Yes I did have to raise the height of the rails. Hopefully you get the idea on this if not I will send you a picture of the under mattress shot, but it is a b**ch to lift it very heavy.

Nice work Dan. I like the drawers. That's a nice addition. Once I'm finished with mine I may look into doing something similar as an add-on.

What I was asking about was the hardware you used to attach the two side rails to the head/footboard. Did you use the recommended hardware from Rockler? Can you comment on how well it works in terms of the bed frame being ridgid?

Thanks,
Bill

Bed

Yes I used the bed hardware from Rockler, at first I hard a hard time figuring out which part went where so I made a mock up with some scrap material and then I got it. Once I put them on the rails and put it all together and put the locking screw in place it was a very good connection. Very secure and solid, I was happy with the result. No shakes rattles or rolls.
