It seems that both camps may be correct. The proper term for the things on eBay appears to be a "dimple die set". In which case, the ones for sale are the male portion of the set, and the corresponding female pieces are missing in action.

They are indeed used to form "chamfers" in sheet metal. One application of this is to prepare aircraft sheet metal for riveting. And I saw something very similar shown with snap-installation equipment.

That’s what I felt when I discovered that other set. I could see that single item could be applicable to both applications.
