[ATTACH]24373[/ATTACH]Has anyone had the occasion to make bowls out of one piece of wood 8x8x3/4". The diameter of the bowl is approx. 7", depth is 2 1/2".

I have turned bowls out of solid block. In this case, it appears that after turning they scalloped the edges, either by hand or using chisels or mechanically using rotary wood carving tools. That's my guess.

I have four blocks of big leaf maple that are approx 8"x8"x5" that have been waiting for me to get back around to some lathe time so I can turn them into bowls...one of these days - I see them calling my name every time I'm down in the shop.
As for the above bowls, I'm at a loss how someone could create such perfect scallops if they indeed were created from single blocks...but I'd sure like to know the trick.
