Sketch Up in Linux

I was able to install Sketch Up in Linux yesterday....Maybe not much for you but an accomplishment for me...Possibly an alternative for all of the people still running XP???

Great for the people who have the need for it. I've never found a need for software like Sketch Up yet, but it is good to know that it will work if I ever need it?
Did you have to load it through Wine?

Yes I did and I also used PlayOnLinux...It installed flawlessly...

I have not used Windows for years....Microsoft alinated me way back when the wouldn't supply a Windows disk with XP...In the begining Linux was a pain to adapt to ...but over the years it has kept improving and now now the distros are great...

I recomend that everyone try it...

I switched from Windows to Linux in 1999. Windows 95 and 98 irritated me so much that I just had to switch to something else. And, I didn't like Macs any better than Windows.

After that many years, Windows is an alien operating system to me, and Linux is the only one I want and use.

I wish more people thought like you do...And you sure can't beat the price...

I never got any suport from Microsoft...Just give us your money and go away..

I would be interested to know how you did this.

I have windows installed on a hardrive I swap out of my lap to so I can load maps in my Garmin GPS. I don't use it for anything else. I use Linux for every thing else.

I feel the same way about :eek:DOS:eek:!

This week I used DOS to create a sub-directory structure with 13,250 files in 2,650 directories.

The files were named commonly in each 4th level directory.

Created a clist structure. It ran for about 15 minutes.

I hate to think how long that would have taken with the :mad

First I installed WINE in Ubuntu...which I am already running...I have found that Mint worked better on some hardware probably because of the drivers supplied and native to the distro....Really beyond me and over my head...But I have found that they install seamlessly on the hardware that I have tried....

Yesterday I also installed PlayOnLinux...Downloaded from Ubuntu Software Center....And finally last of all I installed SketchUp through PlayOnLinux.....And it just works!...

I have not been able to get BigPrint.exe to run for me yet though...And I did want to try it before I bought BigPrint...I loved what he did with it in the demo video...That guy is brilliant...

Have you tried instead of having to switch physical drives...Installing both in a dual boot system?...Easy with the distros that I have tried..

Please PM me if you think I can help...and of course I'll try to respond to any posts here too..

I love Linux and ran Ubuntu on my home computer for years until last week. I went back to Windows. It was for my wife's benefit mainly. She HATES Linux - or as she calls it "That Evil Penguin."

I did have a virtual machine with Windows XP for her to use, but that sometimes caused issues. With XP no longer receiving updates, and recognizing that she uses the computer a lot more than I do, I decided I'd reverse things and put Windows 7 on as the primary OS and set up a virtual machine for Ubuntu for me.

She homeschools our girls (currently ages 6 and 7) and uses the home PC a lot for that. I don't use it very much anymore and mostly use my Android tablet or phone at home.

Microsoft announced the other day that effective some time this year they will no longer provide security updates for XP. Guess you won't be able to get tech support either.

I refuse to go to Maverick OS just released for my Mac so I expect that I will have the same problem someday.
