OK, here’s the finished lid. The box is Zebra wood, Blood wood for the rose petals and feet, splatted birch for the stem, walnut for the lid. The finish is poly, and I think I’ll use something else on the next project. The box turned out just like I wanted it but the finish not so much.

Now, to finish the project spend a few bucks and have a brass plaque with the information on the woods, the date, your daughter's name and yours. This will do two things:

Create a memorable and dated event that anyone who sees it will remember. This usually leads to better care.

80 years from now anyone who sees it will know what it is and it will not end up in a garage sale but will be retained by family members.

It needs to be in Brass not on paper. Or something that will last. Laser engraving is inexpensive. I'll bet you can get some suggestions here.

Beautiful work. Will you make one for me if I send you the description, types of wood I want and a picture of the product through various stages?

Laser engraving on the interior top surface would be a nice touch.

Ah, Engineers vs. old school brass-bottoms. Great suggestion. Now, whom does he contact to do that or how does he find an engraver? Please don't say "Google it". If I had to Google everything I would never have learned from all these ??? who learned most of what they know before Google was even thought of. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are a dying breed; only the knowledge you post here will remain. Then perhaps someone can Google it.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Tthe wife and I did pen a message on the lid bottom. The daughter loves it.
