Howdy friends. I have a SS 500 (upgrade on backorder) I bought used. I have been trying to get the jointer set up. I have never used a jointer. I have followed the manual and all has gone well so far. I am reluctant to use it because the fence seems quite loose and sloppy and I can't for the life of me find a way to secure it. What am I missing?
Thanks

Use the handle on the front end to lock the fence at whatever angle ya want. Push it to the forward nut, that locks the fence. Pull it to the other nut and it locks the width ya want.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Two other things to check. First, that the pin that fits in the, for lack of words, threaded nipple is there. Otherwise, the fence will not lock side to side. Second, if the threaded nipple is loose in the quadrant casting, the fence may be a little sloppy. These get damaged when people pick up the jointer grabbing the free end of the fence.guyt wrote:Howdy friends. I have a SS 500 (upgrade on backorder) I bought used. Yeah it slipped by me too. Tricky little thing that jointer fence quadrant.
Watch out for your inner gorilla as well when adjusting. All it needs to be is snug and not moving around. A gentle touch is all that's needed.

Also when I'm finished with the jointer for the day. I loosen the fence nut to were it just BARELY holds so that the Quadrant Assembly doesn't get bent up.
