One vote for sealed (Bill V), two votes for shielded (Bill Mayo and ShopSmith), so far.

Go for the sealed bearing and do not worry about any extra heat buildup. The bearing if the right size that Bill V discussed is a good bearing. I normally do not buy regular (motor) grade bearings if they are made in China, else where should be OK.

These are manufacturing standards for bearing internal clearances. Thanks for the reference as it explains the benefits of why I try to use higher grade ABEC bearings in all my repairs and rebuilds. I find most bearings used by Shopsmith in the past were ABEC0 (motor) grade bearings including the motor bearings.

Vxb.com delivered the new bearings very fast. I selected premium Nachi sealed bearings per Bill Mayo and Bill V. Perfect fit! Very easy to install, the quill is now smooth, silent, no rumbles. Thanks to all! The bearing numbers are 6002-2NSE and 6003-2NSE.
