2nd Greenie acquired…

Post by idcook »

Just nabbed my second Greenie, including bandsaw, jigsaw, jointer, compressor and router/shaper fence. Delivered for $600 total.

A fair amount of surface rust here and there, but nothing that can’t be handled easily. (A chance to see how well my electrolysis setup will work on a sizable project.)

I’ll check the interior later this evening or during the week when I’m out of the office and can submerge myself more fully into a tinkering mindset.

I went to look for the serial number to better determine its age but found the plate missing. Sort of distressing to me because I like to have as much of the original as possible and I consider that plate to be essential to that end.

While I regard myself still more novice than woodworker I have involved myself enough with my first Greenie to wonder why anyone would remove that plate. I just don’t see any good reason for removing it.

Can anyone offer an ideas about that?

I’ve also decided that this will likely be my last MKV/Greenie. I’ll upgrade one of them to 510-520 and be pretty much done with that phase of my Mark V madness. Henceforth my focus will be loosely directed toward acquiring a 10E or 10ER, a thickness planer and maybe a power station.

While I work on getting both the Greenies where I’d like them to be I’ll devote myself to finish building a basement/outdoor work areas, bench and, finally, making dust. Hopefully by late Spring/early Summer.

Look for the ER version, although parts are available to upgrade.

But, getting a complete E model, with the funny ripfence, and plywood ext table would be fun to see restored.

Very nice purchase and a good deal with all the accessories ! You're right a little surface rust but the greenies are prone to it. Looks like your lower way tubes were painted I have tried to clean them but they were never intended to shine. Keep us posted. Nice very nice indeed ! :D

Casual glance differences (from my first) noted so far—

Poly V belt. (In fact, it appears to have two belts. For some reason this surprised me);

It has the access opening behind the clip on logo shield.

Otherwise this thing looks pretty good inside. Shouldn't take much to get it in good working order.

On the down side —

When the guys delivered they inadvertently placed the headstock right above the jigsaw lampshade. It and the bulb broke when a friend moved the headstock.

If anyone knows where I can purchase an original lampshade (if it matters at all) I'd be much obliged to hear from you.

Might be jumping the gun here but I’ve decided that my first Greenie, with the Gilmer belt and the serial number plate intact, is going to get all the goodies purchased this weekend, restored as a kind of purist effort, while the Poly V headstock will be upgraded (Larger main table, floating tables, reversible drive and so forth).

I’ll care less about the 510-520 setup lacking the plate, and I’m sort of a purist.
At any rate I can still use the SPTs for either setup as needs may require.

But the Gilmer setup is gonna get all the restoration pretty I can give it.

Those lower tubes are rusted. Not so bad as they may look in the photos. When I ran a finger across them the tubes showed through the rust. I didn’t detect any paint at all. They just need a good electric bath and a brisk polish ala MickyD, billmayo, heathicus, JPG, etc. They’ll look good after that.

The poor thing must’ve been caught in a flooded basement at some point. Maybe during the Sandy debacle. The rust on the legs runs straight across up to the same point on both of them.

I have little doubt that your Greenies will be restored to a level of beauty commensurate with the very best seen on this forum! :)

As for your PowerStation ambitions, those machines are not as well engineered as a Mark V, although they can be greatly improved as per this post. At a similar price, I'd go with an older Mark V, and convert it into a "Shorty".

The power station is more an afterthought than anything. I don’t feel it will be absolutely necessary with two greenies in hand. I can always hook up a few, or all of the machines between the both of them.

My deepest concerns now are for a bench, a thickness planer, an adequate electrical setup and decent dust removal system.

Unless something super close and low-cost pops up even the 10 will be way down the todo list. That’s mostly just to slake my thirst to own one of the masterworks among these old machines.
