Thickness sander in a pinch

One can also hand planes for planing small items to the desired thickness.

Yeah, my wife doesn't fall for that scheme. Even when she sets out to buy something, she spends hours or days or weeks or months price comparing and finding the best deal. And if it's not something she has a set plan to buy, it doesn't matter how good the deal is, she's not buying it!

I actually have a couple old Stanley planes, but they're completely disassembled waiting for me to figure out how to refurbish them.

The double sided tape on a longer board is a good idea. But, my planer does have a couple inches worth of snipe at each end that I haven't been able to eliminate.

I'm having an idea though...

Maybe if I cut a stopped groove in a longer board for the strip to ride in. Let the carrier board take the snipe before the small piece I'm planning gets to the blade.

But building a new tool is more fun...

We can extol the virtue of 10E/R way tubes till the cows come home, but do not overlook one important detail. The 10E/R does not have bench tubes. Although the way tubes will likely flex more with the thinner Mark 5 version, the bench tubes will add rigidity to the overall machine. For lathe work the bench tubes are not as helpful as with other setups. The 2 x 6 rails on a 10E/R do add a similar degree of stiffness.

SD which is better, I do not know. One thing I am sure of is a Mark 5 with thicker 10E/R way tubes will be more stable than with thinner Mark 5 way tubes.

and heavier on lathes, heavier is more betterer:D

This looks familiar.

I made one of these years ago. It worked pretty good and used standard size sheets of sand paper. No Velcro or sticky paper around then at least not where I could get it. I never did get used to the thumping noise the joint made and it was hard to adjust. I wonder if this is hiding in the garage somewhere.

Your method probably works better than PVC pipe. More ridged I would think.
