Incra Miter Express

Post by Mike907 »

I just received, and am in the process of putting together the Incra Miter Express that I ordered from Shopsmith.

The description on Shopsmith's site says "Just slip the bar of your Mark 7 or Mark V miter gauge (or any miter gauge) into the piggyback T-slot in the top of the miter sled and twist the three small cam locks that hold it in position there." And "Includes: Two Part Sled with piggyback T-slot."

There are no t-slots in the Miter Express utility plate, so I would have to remove the t-slot washer from the SS miter gauge any time I wanted to use it. Did I receive the non-Shopsmith part, or is the Shopsmith website wrong about the t-slot?

Thanks for any help.

I don't have the Miter Express but I do have Incra equipment. Incra has a miter bar that works (as you would expect) with the Shopsmith miter slot.

These comments from Incra also sound that way.

Great News for Shopsmith Owners!
Shopsmith’s unique miter slot size has previously made it difficult to upgrade the miter gauge, but the Shopsmith version of the Miter Express allows you to mount ANY brand of miter gauge to the sled platform (optional Miter 1000SE
shown), and it works with the Shopsmith gauge, too!

Mike,
I bought my miter express as a combo from INCRA. The miter express has two slots side by side. One (the right) will take any standard 3/4" miter gauge while the other (the left) will fit the Shopsmith miter gauge, however both WITHOUT a T-slot. So yes, you do have to remove the piece on the end of the bar to use the sled.

If the sled from Shopsmith is the same one, you cannot use it with the t-slot adapter.

You will tighten the bar in the INCRA sled slot and move the gauge and sled as one unit. The sled does have t-nuts that will keep it from tipping as you slide it across the table, so you still have the safety of the t-slot.

I do not know if the parts from INCRA are the ones SS sells,

I do know, however, SS sells the Kreg bandsaw fence kit with a different fence extrusion than comes standard with the Kreg. The fence extender for resawing available from Amazon, etc. does not fit the SS fence without drilling more holes in the extender for a sliding t-bolt.

My guess is that the miter express through SS and INCRA are the same extrusions.

Hope that helps.

Be well,
Ben

The miter express only has one slot intended for a miter gauge. It is the one furthest from the blade (right slot when blade is to the left of the sled). This slot has cams to allow you to snug up and trap your miter gauge in the miter gauge receiving slot. The other slot is to allow access to the adjustments that remove the slop of the sleds miter bar in the main work table's miter gauge.

I have the non-Shopsmith version and it does not accept miter gauges with T-washers like the Shopsmith version. I know you can buy parts for the Shopsmith version from Incra as I was investigating converting mine to the Shopsmith version.

For others benefit, here is a link to the manual from the Incra site since it is not on the Shopsmtih site.;)

Hi Rob,

That is very interesting because I use my SS miter gauge in the left slot. It fit well so I just presumed that that was the purpose. When using the SS miter I tighten the set screw in the middle of the bar to hold it and when using the INCRA 1000SE in the right side I use the cams screws to tighten it. It never occurred to me to use the same slot for both.

I bought the Miterset for the Shopsmith bar (both versions) and when I use the one for segment sections, I adjust the SS miter gauge and then lock into the Miter Express. I use the INCRA when working on angles and most everything else.

Reminds me of a story years ago when CD drives were first used in PCs. A trouble call came in that the user's cup holder was broken. The tech explained to the user that there were no cup holders on computers. The user explained that when he/she pressed on the button, the holder came out and they thought it was to hold their coffee cup and now it didn't work anymore. :p

Be well,
Ben

I spoke with Shopsmith CS today, and they have with their Miter Express information a sticky-note that says the washer needs to be removed from the Shopsmith miter gauge to be used with the Miter Express.

I guess the website info is incorrect.
