I will be looking at a 1983 Mark V tomorrow, to add/upgrade my to '57 Greenie, any pros/cons would be appreciated. Asking $400.00 with a BS.

56/57 Greenie with jointer, 85 Mark V with band saw, 63 Goldie with jointer, 3 ER 10s, 1951 vintage, Hernia from the Er 10s, Tool Shop SS clone 6" jointer, and 6" belt sander, Delta 10" TS, Buffalo 6" jointer, Craftsman 12" BS, 10" Ryobi planer. Compound Miter, and misc.

I would look for a double bearing quill and a upgraded table system. I have a 510 and it is not bad but the 520 looks to be the game winner.

If you do not already have a bandsaw, that is worth something. Also, is there a speed reducer or increaser? I wouldn't mind adding a newer one to allow me to line them up together and have a lathe big and strong enough to turn 8' porch posts. If it's in good shape 4 bills may not be too bad.

IMHO even a pre 510 /520 with single bearing quill and bandsaw is worth that if in decent condition. Any other goodies are a bonus.

I have paid as little as $40 for a Greenie a $1000 for a 510 with 5 accessories. So it is all in the eye of the beholder. It sounds like a good deal but you will have to be the judge of that. :o

He emailed the S# it is Mark V-B 202442 which would make it produced in April -May 1985, that should have a dual bearing quill right?

Why some doubt? I thought I read around here the 2 bearing quill came in with S# 190000, with a hammered/rough grey finish in 1983.

I believe that the document you are referring to might be this. This document, I believe to have been compiled by Nick, puts the two bearing quill's introduction to be 1984.

There are other documents out there that attempt to detail the history of our Mark 5/vs. If you attempt to combine them all, you will find some minor contradictions mostly involving the dates of when changes were made. Similarly, you may find minor changes that have obviously occurred that are not detailed anywhere.
