Mark V, 510 Quill shaft bearing removal
I own a 1990 Mark V with a double bearing quill. I am replacing the bearings and need to know how to remove the smaller, inner bearing. The bearing bore is smaller than the quill splines so it can't be pressed off that way. It appears that there is a sleeve spacer pressed on to the shaft, and that is located by a roll pin right next to the small bearing. Does that sleeve have to be pressed off (maybe with heat) to remove the bearing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise it's $ 128.00 for a new quill assembly, unless someone has a used one for sale. Thanks in advance.

The shaft is two pieces held together by a roll pin. Find a punch that is slightly smaller than the roll pin and tap it out. Then the shaft separates, allowing bearing replacement. When the new bearing is on, put the shafts together and tap in the roll pin. Be sure you mark the alignment of the two shaft pieces before you remove the pin, it may not fit if the alignment is 180 degrees "wrong". I used tiny dabs of white paint to mark.

Hey recplaneguy,
I too have some rc plane goodies, but they are very old as is my involvement in the hobby. Of late I have been getting into drones, but that is another story. My shopsmith quill shaft is in fact just like the one you pictured BUT, my shaft refuses to come apart. I had already disassembled it down to trying different methods of pressing the components off/apart, but alas, no luck. When I called SS tech support, their head guy said there was like a year and a half or so when they used this design, but then canned it because of the difficulty in servicing the inner bearing - the two part shaft would bound up and applying sufficient energy would warp or in other ways deform and degrade the assembly past usable tolerances. I found my 25 ton floor press unable to budge the two "half shafts" apart. I put a new big bearing on the end bearing landing, reassembled and other than being slightly noisey, it works well. All in all, the overhaul went well all other bearings, belts and clips are now new, and the headstock works like new. Finished reassembly this afternoon and turned and pen blank into a gift within a couple of minutes. Happy with the results. Thanks so much for your quick response and the great pix's.
