making a motor spring compreesor?

Well the greenie is back together minus the last step of putting the motor spring on. Taking it off with 4 hands worked but feel unsafe and uncomfortable putting it on that way. My idea is to take a piece of 2x4, with a Forstner bit drill a hole the size of the spring cover to depth of about 1", then in the center of that drill a hole through the 2x4 the size of the shaft+ the snap ring. Hve my neighbor do the compressing, while I install the snap ring. Whatda you think?

You do not need the neighbor! If you cut the holey board with the short end just long enough to slip under the edge of the headstock(yes with the motor/pan mounted to the headstock) you canpull the spring in with the other end.

On the other hand I am fortunate enough to not need the board either.(only on the cup type retainer - Washer and nut version do require extra help(jig)). Secret do NOT release until retaining clip IS Secure and always slowly. Good pair of ring pliers a must! After all you will be one handed at that point!

A 1 x 2 with 1/2" deep counter bore is big enough.

The nail end goes into the recess in the shaft. IF yours has a recess in the shaft.

Have not encountered one like that. So the spring has an extension that rides inside the motor shaft?

What is a spring post? Perhaps the 'post' is the 'nail'???

I only know of motor shafts, springs, retaining nut, retaining washer, retaining cup, retaining clip. retaining nut and 'now' a holey motor shaft.

As I recall it, the spring is just a spring. The use of the dowel rod is to keep the spring in control. Without the dowel rod, the spring WILL bend up in the middle and launch itself around the shop.

Hmmmmm. I've always though it was a matter of controlled force direction!;)

Okay guys, Its all handled, Greenie is up and running!!!!!!!!!!!! Just need to do a speed dial calibration. Bushing/sleeve is out of the Goldie, life is good!!!

Hope you have better luck with that than I am having with the Mark VII.
