Today in the shop (Pendant with off-set turning)

Mothers Day project.

I've been expanding my turning interest to other things like in this case a pendant. I've also added a bit of off-set turning for decoration. This was my first try and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Is it perfect, no but I expect with more experience I'll do better.

Wood is birdseye maple. Diameter is 2-1/4", thickness around a 1/4".

Picture one is the front face, this is where the off-set turning was done.

The back is just normal turning with the two circles for some decoration.

No pictures of the process, if people are interested I could make a project of the next one I do. Mind you I'm not an expert but it was fun to do and yes I did purchase some additional hardware for the off-set turning $65.60 to my door.

nice, you will like offset work,
as you get more comfortable, you will dig in the tool a little more to create something like I did here.

used double stick tape on a glue block to hold

Here is my second one. It needs some sanding and then a finish. This button is also made out of birdeye maple. It is just over 1/8" thick, some of the details are lost in the photo but once finished they should show up better.

And yes it is a button.

This reminds me of the first production model of what we used to make from coat buttons. It would need two holes near the center, balanced, threaded with some yarn or twine string, tied together. Put the button in the center and swing it around to wind the string. You need your fingers in the end loops and you can begin to pull it apart so that the center medallion would spin. Can't remember what the toy was called, but it was very good at catching girls hair.
