Finger Plane

Post by Ed in Tampa »

Did anyone ever build the finger plane Nick gave us plans for in Sawdust session 24 Sept 13 2008?
He gave the plans as a PDF file and I was looking at them and thinking I should make this plane.

I was wondering about riveting it together. It shows brass rods running through the read frog, and front finger pad. I was going over this in my mind and I wondered how was the best way to secure these rods. Peen them over, solder them in, glue or ????????

I haven't made that plane, but if I remember the video correctly, he did peen those rods. I remember he used the strip-sander for quite a few steps on that project.

How does it work? Is it a worth while project or there something better?

Once had a plane that was made that used razor blades. The plane was mostly plastic. I bought it on a lark at one of the wood working shows. However even though it looked like a cheap plastic toy, in use the plane was MOST EXCELLENT. At the time I was building houses with my now ex son in law and I carried the plane in my tool belt.

I can not tell you how many times a day I would have the little plane out knocking a smidgen off here and there. When installing doors, windows and trim it was priceless. I loved it.

It got stolen when long haired bed wetting commies stole my tools.

I have looked for the same plane many times and have never found anyone selling one. I have small block planes but they aren't the same. That is what is leading me to this plane, I am thinking about building this finger plane.

Ed, the little plane turned out really nice. I was really proud of it when finished. I haven't used it that much tho and am sure it would work better if I spent the time to sharpen the little blade correctly. Since I haven't had a call to use it I just haven't done anything with it.
If you think you would use it regularly, I think, it would be worth your time if for nothing more than a neat project

And if you don't want to make your own, how about a slightly larger and more expensive thumb plane. Scroll down to the Featured Tool of the Month.
