ER 10s Speed Range??
Now that I am a proud owner of 2 of these classic machines, and after a weekend demo with Mike Young on the infinite speed range of the Power Pro, still have wet and sticky undies on that!!!! What is the an ER 10s pulley only speed range per pulley??? Also with a pristine, #2 ER 10 with an speed changer what is it? I am, just "spit balling here", a great Jack Nicholson line, The low and top end are the same, just gives a bit of definite changes in between, depending on what pulleys you are in. JPG, dont beat me up too bad on this please!!!! I am in a fragile mood tonight!!!;)

The '10' pulleys have three steps each.
The motor run about 1750 rpm.
There are three 'normal' belt positions.
Motor small, headstock large = 1750/2 rpm.
Motor medium, headstock medium = 1750 rpm.
Motor large, headstock small = 1750 x 2 rpm.
So ya gots three speeds - 875, 1750, 3500 rpm.
Now with the speed changer, you have two speed ranges. There are two belts. One goes on the motor pulley, and the other goes on the headstock pulley. One goes to the larger end of the pulley and the other goes to the smaller end of the other pulley. So there are two ways of doing that which gives you two ranges. The cone pulleys are repositioned so the small/large ends are facing the same way(opposite of 'normal' use without the speed changer). The belts are different lengths so the longer one always goes the larger end of the pulleys, and the shorter one always goes to the smaller end of the pulley.(remember the small/large can be either pulley but always only one small and one large) IIRC, the belt lengths differ by 3". The speed changer causes one belt to ride high on the intermediate shaft while the other belt rides low. The speed changer moves the intermediate shaft and the belts seek an equilibrium. The center piece of the speed changer pulley slides along the shaft so as one belt is pulled into the pulley by the crank, the other is pushed out.
So, all this results in:
Speed control setting 0,1,2,3,4,5
Results in slow range 425,555,745,960,1225,1600 rpm
and in fast range 1850,2500,3300,4200,550,6800 rpm
Now earlier speed controls had a greater range by virtue of a different pulley design. That design allowed the belts to go deeper into the pulley. That caused wear problems etc. That version had settings from 0 to 8. The 6,7,8 were located where the blank space is on the 0 to 5 plate.
A word of caution. As the crank is turned the movable part with the intermediate shaft moves, but there are springs between the control arm moved by the crank and the intermediate shaft. Those springs should NEVER be allowed to fully compress when adjusting. Further movement with a spring compressed can result in the parts breaking(the ears where the adjustment attachment points are). This differs from a Mark 5/V/VII in that both directions can cause damage.

JPG, as much rederick/poop I give you here at times, and I expect the same back when deserved or you think you are in the mood to. I only HOPE with what I am learning here from you, and all the other greats here, and putting to hands on, and "I know now, now I do, and understand" when you and they pass, and we all will, if my genes and life style keeps me to my parents age, shit mom is 94, driving in the day and living alone at the house, with my overseeing, I can pass on to the next generation of these classic machines!! Dont really want to know the new ones except for the Power Pro drive system.
The Mother Ship is like a womans tease, just enough good engineered good stuff to drag us in to the seduction!!! A Great product/engineering to keep it all capatable!!!

Motor small, headstock large = 1750/2 rpm.
Did I get that right???? the head stock will only turn 2 RPMs??
I now own 2 of these classics, want a low RPM machine for metal drilling and wood lathe work.
Can I install different pulleys to get a lower HS RPM if 2 rpm was a miss quote/understanding?

If you want to go to really low speeds with a 10E/R, check out this low speed kit video. Be patient ... the slide show is followed by actual video.rbursek wrote:Motor small, headstock large = 1750/2 rpm.
