It is like a 'fat' pop rivet and the inside has threads. It is 'popped' by using a threaded pull pin that pulls the end of the shank that expands at the pulling end using the pop rivet tool. The threaded pull pins are somewhat reusable.

I have not looked for them recently.

Aka "nutserts". Which may actually be a brand name, but you'll get tons of hits if you Google it.

I think pictures will tell it all. These tools are invaluable when working with sheet goods. I even use the Rivnuts in hardwood. The larger tool is required to expand the nut enough to hold but it works.
