This would seem to be a good time to share my own very recent incredible-bargain-that-got-away story. The middle of last week, an ad cropped up on Craigslist, complete with photos. For sale was a nice clean Mark V 500. It included almost every Shopsmith SPT that I own. Planer, jointer, bandsaw, jigsaw, 6" belt sander. Everything looked to be in very good condition. Nary a speck of rust in sight. All for $400!

I didn't need any of it, had no time to fetch it, and no place to store it. But it seemed like a great opportunity to lure a good neighbor buddy deeper into woodworking. Here's the email that I sent him, along with the CL link:

Mike:

If you want a Shopsmith, buy this NOW:

It is an incredible bargain, and will sell very quickly. Don't even worry about inspecting it.

We are moving my work over the next two days, and then the family and I will be gone this weekend on a rafting trip. So unfortunately, I can't help except possibly on Thursday evening or Friday. Don't let that stop you!

... Dennis

I even texted him, telling him to check his email ASAP.

The stuff was only an hour away. Unfortunately, by the time he actually checked on it that evening, the posting had been deleted.

I do believe that I saw the planer up for sale on eBay today. :(

I think we should save those incredible craigslist deals pages so next time we look at an old 500 with $2000 asking price we can educate the seller on what is really worth : )

This is what happens to your stuff when you croak. If I'm croaked, I don't care what they do.

There is normally at least 50 Shopsmiths always listed on Craig's List in Florida. I let a 520 with an SPT for $300 slip by me recently, no coins available as I just get a nice 510 for $150. These really cheap Shopsmiths are really hard to pass up for me but with a shop and shed filled with Shopsmiths, my wife gets really upset each time I go to look at one.

I do email some of the CL sellers who ask "half the price of a new one", "firm" and tell you what a "deal" you are getting at that price. To see it on CL for a few months. One emailed me back and said he would give it to GoodWill B4 selling it at the going rates that I told them they are in reality selling for.
Best one was selling it for $800, " I know I can get a $1000.00 for it", sat there for a couple months.
