Literally this current thread or did you mean to link to another thread??dusty wrote:I am still working on the initial question in this thread but one of my searches brought me to this thread (again). Many will find it just so much about nothing but I found it very interesting and helpful too better understand the dynamics of Main Table Alignment.

Not sure I understand table 'heeling' when moving from horizontal to vertical.

Ed, I don't even know if I actually have a problem with the table. I know that it is not perfectly flat and I know that this bugs me but I do not know whether it is "out-of-spec" or not. What constitutes out-of-spec? What do I NEED in order to make that determination?
These are rhetorical questions to which I do not expect an answer. I am just ranting. With my background I have a hard time dealing with the idea of not being able to answer such questions.:eek:This has very little (if anything) to do with my inability to drill proper holes.

Another day, a clearer mind.
Back when I made that earlier statement, the subject was Dusty's heeling outfeed table.
Now in the current context, my recent 'lack of understanding' was while considering the more narrow subject at hand.
If the table is not flat, the intent of shimming to the mounting blocks is to hopefully pull the table surface low area(s) up to the higher area. That will only work for small deflections and in those 4 areas directly under the mounting screws.
Now if as Dusty insists(not unreasonable for small shims) the table is essentially rigid, the effect of shimming will be to raise the nearest corner or edge.
Now we must make a distinction between flat and level(level as in at right angles to the carriage posts/way tubes/quill etc.
If a perfect machine. the table when flat will also be at right angle(s) to them all in different 'cardinal' directions. Also the trunion pivots will be equidistant from the way tubes and at a right angle to their length.
However we do exist in a less than perfect world. Since the table 'tilts' on those trunion pivots, the near right angles adjusted to in table saw mode may not transfer when rotated to drill press mode(we can ignore the base hinge for this discussion).
Shimming will 'cause' greater heeling(remember it is not perfect) if it causes the table when tilted to traverse a greater radius at one point than all other points on the table. i.e. different radius traveled for different points.
That heeling causes the table to change 'squareness' to the carriage posts/way tubes/quill etc. mentioned above.
Since Dusty insists the table is rigid, the tilt stop screws will not compensate for that(I think it is flexible enough to help small deviations especially after a load is placed upon it in drill press mode).
My 'problem' with heeling is I tend to think of it in terms of more than one moving part and them not 'tracking' as heeling.
