All I've done so far is take the headstock and table off in order to get it in my station wagon. I'm not up to speed on the terminology yet. Is the quill shaft the shaft that appears to have the saw arbor on it? The arm that moves it back and forth moves smoothly, as did the headstock move nicely on the rails.
Also, what's the black colored support that is attached to the headstock? Is it non-stock?

Yep that isn't a SS product.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

It is worth $40 to anyone who wants to know that thye can tear down and rebuild a Shopsmith headstock...just for the experience of having done that.
If the motor works, that alone is worth most of your $40.
I'd have paid $40 for it in a minute because ther are other parts there that I would like to have. If I ever stumble across a similar deal, it will be photographed and highlighted in one of my threads.
Don't let your expectations get too high. Just tear it down, clean it up and then we'll see just what you have. Minimal rusat, I hope.
Plan on spending a few dollars for bearings and belts and maybe a switch.

My guess is the black thing was a mount for a lamp.
Those angle irons are not oem either.
By quill shaft moving by hand, I meant rotate(rotate the thingie on the end).
I cannot tell for sure, but the thingie looks like it has a coupling hub on the end.
Be on the look out for other 'unusual' items. Take pix. We like to see innovations.
