Headstock Repairable?

Hello all,

I'm a relative newcomer to the Shopsmith world. My dad had one growing up, but it was his baby & I never got to use it. Now that I have my own place, I figure it's a good thing to have around.

I managed to acquire a free-to-me 1954 Greenie, but it has a 'little' problem. Does anyone think this is repairable, or is it better/safer to write it off & find a new headstock? I'm not really sure if I'd trust JB Weld here...

I think I know the answer, but deep down I'm hoping there is a way to save this thing. Any ideas?

I found the expense of welding an ear exceeded what I paid for another casing. You will need a really good aluminum welder too. I used one that welded aluminum surfaces on airplanes for years. Of course, he had to move a few years ago and I only have an average aluminum welder to do my welding these days.

This appears to be an "A headstock with out an access hole. I have a few "A" headstocks on my truck for the salvage yard. I would be happy to part with one of the "A" headstock castings for $5 plus shipping expense. A stripped "B headstock is $20 plus shipping and I get $40 for the stripped "C" headstock casing. I have reconditioned assemblies available for all Headstocks. Contact me off line at my Email address if interested. Thanks.

Talk to Bill about using a B headstock, they have an access hole for lubing.

Have no idea how successful this bolted on attempt was, but here is the only repair photo I have run across:

In the right picture, you can see that the eccentric bushing retaining washer is no longer able to retain the idler sheave bearing if the eccentric bushing set screw becomes loose. This is why I recommend a 3/4" body washer as a replacement for this purpose. I did not have any good pictures to show this.
