Craigs List

Post by dusty »

Why are postings that tell us all where someone has listed a Shopsmith for sale on Craigs List so interesting?

I really do not need to know that there is a Shopsmith for sale in some far off out of the way place. I don't even need to be told that there is a smoking good deal here in Tucson. I look at the Tucson CL myself.

I would be interested in a brand new Power Pro double tilt with all the attachments available listed for $500.00 I would drive across the US for that deal. I sure would not be happy if that kind of deal was out there and my search tool didn't extend far enough miles to locate it for me. I would be glad if someone here brought it to my attention. I can choose to not click on a post that has CL in the subject line :) I have posted my share of good deals in the past and am as guilt as the next guy.

Rest assured that if I ever see a Brand New Power Pro Double Tilt available on Craig's List for $500 - I won't be telling you or anyone else about it.

What would be real nice would be for everyone who wants to post things like "Smoking Deals on CL" would put them in the Community Forum with an appropriate title. Items like this certainly do not belong in any of the other forum categories.

If you are talking about me being crabby this morning...no, I am not crabby. I am fed up with some of the none sense that gets posted on the forum and it is not just this morning.

I think most of us here that collect Shopsmith tools (it's even reported that some folks actually do woodworking with them  ) monitor our local CL ads and eBay on a regular basis. The value of a right or low priced system across the country from me is zero... I'm told that Shopsmithing/woodworking is supposed to be a hobby; posting frantically about it, I'm not so sure about.

I tend to agree and what is a "Smoking Deal" to some people are often pieces of junk to me.

When I see a tool covered with rust I usually avoid it. If the person thought so little of the tool that they would allow it to fall into that bad of shape I have to believe they are also the people that abuse the machine mechanically also.

I would expect bearings to be shoot, shafts to be bent, nuts/bolts to be rounded and cases cracked or broken from being hammered on or used as a hammer. I would not be surprised to find it had been in a house fire or flood. Or owned by a person that did all his work using a pair of channel lock pliers. I often find critical parts at the point of failure do to metal fatigue because the previous owner found it easier to bend it a little than to actually loosen the adjustment screw.

I personally have dragged enough of that junk home only to find it useless after taking up space in my garage and making me drag it to the dump.

As one who often has 'put out the word', I offer my viewpoint.

I can see the reason for the 'heads up' posts to be in community, but those who might actually be interested will likely be cruising the M&R forum.

Not all here cruise the CL & e-bay sites daily. Geez some folks have to still work for a pay check!

I agree more folks here are not interested in saving these machines than those that do, but these posts do sometimes spin off into discussions regarding some things that not all here have 'seen' before. i.e. learning occurs.

So I will continue to put them in the M&R forum with a 'Heads Up' title.

Those not interested or offended by them will know to not click on them.:)

FWIW IMHO A good natured jab at being crabby is a reasonable thing for a fed up person venting to endure.;)

You view all of this just exactly as I would have expected. You are one of the guys who use this forum more like a chat room than a forum.

If you don't know what I am talking about, check out all of the interchanges between you and Bob. You and Bob personify what I am bitching about.
