Was it worth $40, considering what's missing?

So you SHOULD be able to raise it to the drill press mode with the quill pointing DOWN. Knot up.

Let's see if an upper middle-aged guy can do any better. ;)

One side of the Shopsmith base assembly has a hinge pin. The other side has a latch. To tilt the machine up into drill press mode, you have to release the latch on one side, and then you can lift the headstock and way (upper) tubes, rotating them about the hinge pin.

After lifting and rotating about the hinge pin until the upper "way tubes" are in a vertical position, the headstock should be above the table, with the quill/chuck pointed down toward the table. If you don't get these results, then something is assembled bass-ackwards. ;)

ponytail, got it. Thanks. perfect word for it. Is there a glossary for the 216 other odd words for parts of an SS I've heard in the 3 days I've known about them?

Knot that I know of, but if ya read about a unknown to you part, Just ASK. Like SPT = Special Purpose Tool = bandsaw, jointer, etc.

Here's an exploded view.

This is for a 510, but most of the part names are the same.

I tried to start the Mark V today, after lubing everything visible and using the sander to lower the speed to its lowest, as suggested. It ran for about 30 seconds before popping the breaker. The cord was getting hot. I tried adjusting the sped, but the dial popped out towards me a bit and made a chattering sound, like gears meshing which I'm sure they were doing.

Ideas, gents. Just point me to threads if this has been covered before.

thanks

It sound like you need to take that headstock apart and clean/lube up all the shafts and sheaves in the drivetrain. Something is binding and putting an unusual load on that motor. And it maybe, just maybe, be in the speed control lol.

Ok, thanks. Are the videos here on the site considered the best learning tool for the first timer? Is there one covering dis-assembly and lubrication? Hopefully reassembly as well, I hate watching films backwards. ;)
