What is considered commercial use? Is reposting someone else's craigslist link commercial use or simply passing on information? It can get tricky...

This has been the topic of discussion here on the forum more than once.

I do not believe that a consensus has developed but I have developed an opinion, for whatever that is worth.

I believe that if you do something that results in you collecting monies (not necessarily make a profit), you have been involved in a commercial act.

Sending me your unneeded headstock in exchange for what ever I want to give back to you would, in my opinion, be a commercial act. Even if what I send back to you is a burned out motor, we participated in a "commercial exchange". I gained - you lost.

I have spent thousands of dollars upgrading and maintaining my 6 Shopsmiths which I have acquired via Craigslist. I'm sure the mothership would have preferred I purchased new machines, but they surely are happy with what business they get from me and are not going to run me off because I post a link now and again to Craigslist. At least they are gaining possible new customers for their parts that they might not have otherwise if purchasing new units was the only way to get into this hobby.
I'm sure they will let me know when I step out of bounds. Until then I will continue to alert the members here of what I consider great deals.

Our purpose in the forum is to provide added information and support to Shopsmith enthusiasts.

Others (Craigslist, Ebay, etc.) provide places for buying and selling of items.

The definition of "results in you collecting money" comes close to our intention.

While I appreciate the sharing of great deals, I do have a concern that it clutters the forum (many posts here have lasting information value, an old post about an item that was on Craigslist a year ago is much less useful to newer readers).

To minimize the issue, could we start a thread (in Community) and add posts to that one thread about items found? Although not an "official" policy, I would, as current admin, certainly find that a reasonable approach.

A perfect solution. I would use it if it was there. Is there some way to keep the thread at the top of the list.

Though arriving a little late to the skirmish my reason for interest in those kinds of posts is because I just plain get a kick out of seeing what’s offered, wherever it is.

These posts often offer a newbie such as myself some previously unrecognized understandings of the machines. As those who’re more familiar with the systems tend to offer comments regarding condition and parts that may be missing or even not belonging to the machine at all.

Also, unusual things pop up. Such as a recent offering showing what looked to be a sort of Mark V head mounted on an unusual base being offered as an early prototype.

In general these posts simply pique my curiosity without me having to do all the searching.

Frankly speaking, I enjoy them.
