I think they are very good, Plus you have some step by step with pics from members here in the maintenance sticky's. I had to change belts on my greenie when I got my first one, yes I am mechanically inclined, but never did it B4, between the videos, the stickys, and if confused/not sure, asked here and except for not understanding some of the abbreviations from that guy with the big head, I mean hat, in KY, it was easy. They are a real simple machine internally.
Measure once, cut as many times as needed to get it right! Bob

crab wrote:I tried to start the Mark V today, after lubing everything visible and using the sander to lower the speed to its lowest, as suggested. It ran for about 30 seconds before popping the breaker. The cord was getting hot. I tried adjusting the sped, but the dial popped out towards me a bit and made a chattering sound, like gears meshing which I'm sure they were doing.
Ideas, gents. Just point me to threads if this has been covered before.
thanks
I would replace the power cord. Here is a thread that discuses the replacement Power Cord Replacement
If the speed dial is popping out, check that the set screw is seated in the dimple on the shaft.

Not a video but this thread by JPG covers reassembly

If ya replace the power cord, CUT the old power cord off, but leave the orginal connect with about 6" of wire left on. So yo can tell where the new ones go.rpd wrote:I would replace the power cord. Here is a thread that discuses the replacement Power Cord Replacement

The cord is not original, it's a gray "appliance" grade cable with a good sturdy end. doesn't look frayed or worn to me, but what the heck, I can change it. Cable is crazy expensive these days.rpd wrote:I would replace the power cord. Here is a thread that discuses the replacement Power Cord Replacement

thanks for replying. Now I need to find a grease proof laptop to prop up next to the machine so I can read/watch while working..
Thanks for all the good positive reinforcement you've been giving, I appreciate it.rbursek wrote:I think they are very good, Plus you have some step by step with pics from members here in the maintenance sticky's. good idea. reminds me of the first time I replaced spark plug wires, in high school. as you can imagine, I tore them all out at once before replacing one. Fun. that car made some funny sounds till I got it figured out.beeg wrote:If ya replace the power cord, CUT the old power cord off, but leave the orginal connect with about 6" of wire left on. If it has been replaced it may be ok. I thought you were dealing with an original 60 year old cord. When I replaced the cord on my 10ER I used a 12 gauge extension cord and cut off the female plug.crab wrote:The cord is not original, it's a gray "appliance" grade cable with a good sturdy end. doesn't look frayed or worn to me, but what the heck, I can change it. Crab,
look real good at the cords anti strain device, and no I dont mean "Dupalax", I had the original on my greenie cord and changed it when redoing the belts, a real PITA, you cant use the old anti strainer if original, I used a 12ga extension cord, I looked all over for an anti strainer to fit it, could not find a perfect fit, then had to drill a 3/4" hole in the motor pan for the new one.

Just for curiosity, what size wire was in the 'hot' cord, and how long was it?
A voltage starved motor will run hot and draw excessive current. A power cord with too small wire will cause voltage deprivation.
#14 minimum, #12 better.
