I just got this one from my dad. Serial # 96917. I remember him using it when I was a kid. The motor just hums so I'll have someone look at it. I have a newer Mark V that I inherited from my father n law. Go figure that ending up with two of these. The 10E seems like a more stout machine for sure. Any clue when the 10E was made? My dad can't quite remember and he bought it new. Maybe late 40s? One thing you can't see in the photo is a large pulley that has the number 1953 embossed on it twice. Looks like the same paint on it just curious what that may be. Couldn't seem to upload a photo so I've posted a link if that helps. http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af1 ... G_2398.jpg

That's a nice machine. It will take some work, but should clean up nicely. You've got the jointer and jointer headrest which is kind of rare. And the miter bar that lets the Mark 5 miter gauge and hold down be used on the 10ER. The 10E/10ER was made 1948 through 1953. The pulley with 1953 embossed on it is to drive the jointer and is separate from the 3-step pulley on the motor to drive the quill.

A few slipped out of the factory in 1947. Mark 5 production began in 1953.

The switch looks to be the same as i have seen used for light switches in old houses built in the same era as the machine.
I have made some progress on dismantling ready for cleaning up and rust removal. The tie bar and tail stock were quite stuck but a lot of WD40 persuasion got them off safely.
I will tackle the headstock over the weekend. From what i have read on here the quill spring can be a little tricky to reinstall. I will post progress pictures over the weekend.

Thanks JPG, I didn't even give kerosene a thought.
I have started to pull the headstock apart today. I am having some trouble getting the pulley assembly apart. Is there a bit of a trick to getting this apart?

Set screw? Pix almost looks like more than one pulley. 'Over here' it is a one piece casting.
FWIW, most 'older' penetrating 'oils' smelled like kerosene. It stinks, but not as much as some 'modern' concoctions.

Got it figured out, the set screw was out and i had been spraying oil down the hole to try and get some down the middle hoping that would assist. It ended up being a slight flare on the last 2-3mm of the drive shaft. It was only flared by .6mm, it was enough to stop the pulley coming off.
Once i got that sorted i moved to the metal lathe and made a punch that fitted inside the drive shaft and slightly smaller in diameter to the outside of teh shaft, I also used this to remove the bearings so i avoided any further flaring of the drive shaft.
Had a very productive day, everything is apart ready for cleaning and rust removal. There will be alot of polishing too i'm sure
I am amazed at the quality of these machines and how well they are assembled. Just goes to show they were made to last.
I have no idea last time it was run, judging by the condition of the cable i would say it has been many years or even over a decade. The motor ran....all be it a little rough. It ran for about a minute before it started to smoke a bit. It will be off for a quote fro repairs next week.
Are the headstock/quill bearings readily available from a bearing supplier or is there a specific place i can order them from?

Try cleaning the motor out first.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .
