About three weeks ago, I bought a Shopsmith 10e (S/N 19186) for $100 off a Craig's List ad. Before dropping the cash, I read through MickeyD's entire 10er rebuild thread and was positively blown away not only by how we he detailed every step, but by all of the amazing support you guys provide. This forum is amazing.
I'm buttering you up because I need help. My plan is to completely refurbish the 10e, which, so far, has not been difficult. It has needed a lot of love, but it nowhere near the rusty shape I've seen others on here.
Step one has been to clean off the 60+ years of caked up grease and sawdust, which prevented the quill from turning among other things. I have disassembled the headstock and was even able to pop out the headstock pulley assembly. The bearings are super caked with gunk, and one of them feels a little tight. I'm trying to pop the pulley off the shaft so I can get to the bearings. But that pulley is on there TIGHT.
I already removed the set screw, so that's not it. I've completely deformed the pulley using a bearing puller and pulley puller trying to pry it off. I've drenched the thing in PB Blaster and the shaft has budged a good solid inch, but no more. The top of the shaft is not about 1/8th of an inch inside the pully. I'm now using a hammer and tap on it, but I"m concerned about damagin the shaft itself.
Any clues on how to get this damn pulley off the shaft? Not sure I'll need to do it on the motor but, if so, any tips for getting it off the shaft without deforming the pulley? I've tried both the three-arm pulley puller as well as the split bottom style bearing puller - both wildly deformed the pulley.

Heat is another tool in the arsenal .. it helped me persuade an arbor to come off the spindle of my own 10ER. Too much runs the risk of damaging a part, but it sounds like your pulley is already ruined. So I don't see any reason not to try it.
I'd apply some pressure with the pulley puller, and then heat the pulley with a propane torch. The objective is to heat the pulley quickly and fairly evenly, causing the aluminum pulley to expand. Heating it rapidly minimizes the amount of heat that gets transferred to the motor shaft -- you want it to stay as cool as possible.

Tried heating it with a torch last night and trying to knock the shaft through with a hammer and a makeshift tap (I used the inner shaft of the pulley puller) to no avail. However, didn't try it while under tension from the pulley puller. I believe I have my marching orders for the evening. Thanks! Will keep y'all posted.

First off. Welcome to the SS forum Doc.
Next thing is try cleaning the shaft behind the pulley, then knock the pulley back to it's original position. Then clean the shaft in front of it. Both steps checking for burrs, then try again to remove it. If all else fails, cut it off.

SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.
