I absolutely concur 100%... the occasional thread hijacking or voluminous posting of some members while tedious were not the cause of the recent discontent. It lays squarely at the feet of one individual.idcook wrote:Appalled by the decision by some members to leave the forum I've noted, what seems to me, an effort by those members to broach the subject in as forgiving a light as possible.
I'll step out on a limb here by stating that "hijacked" discussions are NOT what lead to this unrest but, rather, a seeming continuous stream of grossly inappropriate comments made by a single member. Comments so coarse that one of the most informative and temperate members was compelled to openly complain about that members behavior. Though, strictly speaking, he wasn't the first to do so.
While highjacked discussions have shown themselves a severe annoyance to some member the true issue, being skirted somewhat, is that rbursek had (maybe still does) made a great many crude and often nearly senseless comments that have not merely taken a discussion off course but often expressed the most reprehensible perspectives imaginable. It was mere icing on the cake that those comments had nothing to do with woodworking. They were deplorable comments about women, marriage, sex, race, etc.
Rather than a reshuffling of the forum itself I suspect what's needed is for Admin to accept and investigate complaints and, if they deem it necessary, banish members who conduct themselves unreasonably.
What I find truly fascinating is that that individual has gone almost silent as this thread and the "Notice of Absence" thread have developed with numerous members voicing their displeasure over the behavior that this individual has exhibited since his arrival. I also have noticed that the few members who seemed to have encouraged his bizarre behavior have also not risen to his defense within these threads.
If our Admin is going to increase the policing of our community, I think that is a great thing and well overdue. We should not allow the uneducated, illiterate, racist and misogynistic rants of one "Troll" to drive away valuable members of our community.

We must not lay all of the blame for the ills of this forum at the feet of "Wild Bad Bob". He did what he did with the assistance of others. Unlike the others, he has been reprimanded by the Administrator - I suspect that is why he has gone silent.

It's good to know that particular issue was addressed.dusty wrote:We must not lay all of the blame for the ills of this forum at the feet of "Wild Bad Bob". The I recognize that many most members, including myself, regarded rbursek as little more than a sometimes amusing but too often thoughtless blowhard it is annoying to see reasonable, knowledgable and helpful member driven from the boards.
While I understand that "hijacking" is something of a sore point among the active membership it wasn't lost on me that evidence of seriously bad blood boiling was greatly exacerbated by the addition of continuously negative commentary.
The hijacked threads tended to go off on off, but the negative posts would bring pretty much any discussion to a halt.
I'm still too new a member to feel my statement should bear any more weight than many others here but, for me anyway, I'd much rather see the removal of useless and vindictive commentary rather than lose congenial banter of the average hijacker and certainly not members such as Dusty, Reible, JPG, algae, etc. who, even if they happen to go off topic will at least retain a generally civil tone.

In order to describe the situation in a professional and highly technical manner I would have to say...
Things were going to hell in a hand-basket...

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.
