Pay Pal
Some days I'm dense. Today I am denser than usual. I applied for a Pay Pal account but Pay Pal seems to contradict themselves concerning menthods of payment. They plainly say one cannot pay using a credit card yet in almost the same voice, they make it possible to link a credit card with the account. Is not linking a credit card the same as using one to pay your bill? I ask the question to them and the response was that you cannot use a credit card. What experiences have others had with this company and is it truly safe? There are some online places that only accept Pay Pal.
When I signed up for PayPal several years ago they wanted bank account number and a credit card number.
The primary pay was from the bank account but if there was a problem with that then they would bill the credit card as a backup.
I don't use PayPal that often so things may have changed since then.

I use paypal pretty regular. credit card only. Its not even linked to my bank account, which is the way i want it. It is convenient, and buying on ebay, the only way quite often.

I use PayPal regularly and almost all of my online purchases are paid for by my Visa account thru PayPal to the merchant. Looking at my statements, it seems to me that the PayPal involvement is administrative only (except for their fee).
That is to say that only PayPal's share of the purchase price (their fee) goes to PayPal while the balance of the transaction amount is deposited in the merchant's account. The total transaction cost is charged to my Visa.

I have been using PayPal for 15 years. I have a PayPal Debit card that I use to pay EVERYTHING that will accept it because I get 3% cash back. I usually get between $150 and $175 back each month. So I pay with the card, and PayPal takes the funds right out of a bank account where I maintain a limited balance and transfer cash in as needed. I have never had a single problem with PayPal.

Are you looking at buying or selling with paypal?
If buying only, I would keep no balance in paypal and have it linked to my credit card. By using it this way, the transaction is technically with your credit card.
If you get into a dispute with a company, you have both paypal and your cc that will fight on your side as they don't want to loose the money either.
If selling, you need to get the money out of paypal. While you can do it without linking to a bank account, it makes life a whole lot easier to be tied to your bank account.
As a seller is the only way you will probably have any issues with paypal as they will put YOUR money on HOLD if someone raises a dispute instantly even if the dispute is frivolous.
Without it linked to your bank, they generally will limit the amount of money that you can spend or receive.
Technically I have never had an issue with paypal other than I trust them about as far as I can throw a complete shopsmith and I feel the fees kind of get ya in the shorts as a seller. As a buyer, you don't see any fees.

I've bought and sold. Buying I use only a credit card because I have a 60 day protection from the card and don't need to rely on PayPal. When selling I request a money transfer if they have a balance in the payPal account or can transfer from a bank account. Credit Cards cost a fee. For your best protection always pay with a credit card; for buying ask the seller to send it as a "gift". No cost to you or the seller, but you don't have protection but don't really need it.

Guys: I thank each of you so much for clearing this issue up for me. I shall stick with the credit card. I think one thing which confused me was that they issue a line of credit and it is that which you cannot pay back with a credit card. What you can pay back with a credit/debit card are purchases which does not involve that line of credit. I told you I was dense. Anyway I think we can consider this thread closed. Many thanks again.
