Are there any advantages of one or the other? Also, did the 510 discs have a longer mounting shaft?
Side note...just picked up a SS 510 complete and in great shape. Even had the telescoping legs. It will be my "go to" machine....and a SS dust collector. I am just giddy.

Steel vs Aluminum sanding disc?
SS Mark V (1983 from Grandfather) upgraded to a 510, pieces to make a 500 mini, SS bandsaw, belt sander, broken scroll saw, and strip sander, Jet VS Mini Lathe, and tons of Lee Valley and vintage Stanley planes. Woodcraft slow speed grinder and a German made Tormek wannabe. Ridgid TS 3650 Table Saw, General 80-075LM Jointer.
Thanks! What do you know about aluminum vs steel sanding discs?

Congrats on your new to you 510!

Is that why they are built in? I figured it was for support in case the aluminum got hot to resist warping. I guess it would have to get real hot for that though.

thanks. I already have different ones that I was making a complete unit out of. This one though, wow. Not a speck of rust anywhere. No stained up tables, and has the legs. Woohoo. I got a lot of little stuff I had been looking for. Now I need the bigger casters. I plan to have a few machines setup for a home school shop class. My friend is a welder and another friend is a brick mason so that will be it. Woodshop, welding, masonry. Don't have any auto mechanics. I'll also be facilitating health sciences and math since I am an RN. Should be fun.algale wrote:Congrats on your new to you 510!

Oh I'd suspect you're right, cast aluminum would need some buttressing. I think the 'windage' is just a side-effect....ibskot wrote:Is that why they are built in? I figured it was for support in case the aluminum got hot to resist warping. I guess it would have to get real hot for that though.
