Inside bore, outside diameter and thickness, shielded or unshielded.

For a home wood working machine, what else is there?
Dusty, clearance.

For the drive sleeve/pulley, "bearings is bearings." BUT, for the quill, (and listen to this, you Mark Series guys, it applies) the clearance between the balls and the races is VERY important. C-1 clearance is REQUIRED here, unless you like slop in your cuts. That is why the Model 10 series was able to reproduce 0.0005 runout, (yes, 5 ten thousandths) and was shipped with a 0.001 runout.

Here are the specs, copied from Skip's group.

The original 10ER bearings are C1 grade precision bearings.
If you get bearings other than the Fafnir 202KLL3 and 205KLL2 -
Make sure you ask for C1 precision bearings, especially for the spindle.
Most bearing sales reps don't know this and will give you C3 motor grade
bearings.

Sizes are
.6299 ID (16 MM)
1.378 OD (35MM)
.5669 W (14.4 MM)
Original felt shielded Fafnir 202KLL3 =

-- Pulley / Drive Sleeve bearings

Sizes are .9843 ID (25 MM)
2.0472 OD (52 MM)
.5906 W (15 MM)
Original felt shielded Fafnir 205KLL2
good C3 substitute double sheided Fafnir 205KDD

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Where to buy 10e Bearings

Post by dusty »

This is going to be a departure (a highjack) from the original title of this thread but is still closely related.

It seems as though 10e bearings are hard to find for two reasons. First is a dimensional problem and second is the load rating (C1).

I thought that both were going to be issues that could be resolved simply by opening the wallet a little further. That may not be the case.

The 202KLL3 bearing measures 16,35,14.4; the 14.4 dimension seems to be the sticker. I could not locate any current, popular vendors who offer this. However, some offer a substitute that would require a shim to make up the difference.

The other major difference is the load rating. I always thought that the load rating referred to something different than it actually does. Basically a C1 rated bearing is expected to last longer (more revolutions) under a specific load than are lesser rated bearings.

I always thought that a C1 bearing was expected to provide less runout (be more tightly spec'd. That does not seem to be the case.

Now in practice, it may be true that Fafnir bearings were more precision than their competitors but that may have been "in the good old days".

I would suggest that equal quality bearings are now available from other vendors like Timken. I would also suggest that "you get no more than you pay for". If low price is what grabs your eye, forget it. Runout numbers like 0.0005" will be unachievable.

My opinion: If you want to make your Mark V drill press perform on an equal basis with an old reliable 10e, you are going to have pay more. If you are simply retrofitting a 10e, you will also pay more but will also have to tolerate those shims.

Not sure but it wouldn't take long to find out. People ship stuff all over the world. Worth a try or at least call Skip and see what he suggest.

10ER Bearings

Post by kschwarz20 »

When I did my restore a few years ago I bought my bearings from Skip at MKC (mkctools.com), and I used his video to install them. He only sells top quality bearings. They are not inexpensive, but he sells them for a very fair price. After all the time I put into restoring my 10ER, it was worth the small amount of extra money to me to be sure I was putting in high quality bearings.

Since I don't have a press I was afraid it would be hard to install them, but his video made the process very easy. If I restore another machine, Skip will be my source for those bearings too!

I see them available through Amazon but they are expensive
Please forgive my ignorance but why such an old machine used metric bearings?
Were them common at the time?

Tis 'non-metric' bearing dimensions that are 'unusual'.

OD and length are almost always metric. The id may vary to accommodate 'imperial' dimensioned shafts.

The bearing id numbers specify the all three dimensions, but a 'imperial' id will add an additional number to the id number.

A 6203 bearing is 17 x 40 x 12 mm.

A 6203-10 bearing is 5/8" x 40mm x 12mm.

I have left off the shield/seal suffixes for 'clarity'.

I have both the quill bearings and drive sleeve bearings for the 10E and 10ER instock. I made a good buy on the quill bearings so I can run a sale on them. I ship any place in the world. Please contact me if you want bearings or have questions on replacing them. I rebuild 1 quill and drive sleeve per week, on average.
