ShopSmith Band saw question

Post by samvt »

Hi all first post , have to admit I own no Shopsmith products, but have a chance to pick one up. A friend of my wifes is recently divorced and knows I have a small woodshop and she has some stuff to get rid of. Went and looked and she has a like new Shopsmith model 505641 band saw (it is the free standing model with its own base). It looks brand new. She wants 150$ for it just wondering if that is a ok deal. There are a few blades with it and it fires right up. Thanks again

Grab it. The stands go for more on E Bay. Properly tuned, The SS bandsaw is one of the best. Self tracking feature alone is worth the price

I'd buy it for that if it was offered to me. I already have a bandsaw and a power stand for it but I take it for that price anyhow. The motor alone is worth $100++.

That is a great deal. Most people pay that just for the bandsaw alone. Get it and start the addiction know as Shopsmith. :D

I don't think I ever met anyone who started their extensive Shopsmith collection with an SPT on a power stand. :)

Welcome, and a few things I learned when I got my ss bandsaw

Post by fitzhugh »

I love the bandsaw - it's why I got my used shopsmith. A few things to note:

You can't follow the endless "Ten Steps To Bandsaw Magic!"/"Tune Your Bandsaw Like A PRO!!!" "How To Stop Worrying and Learn To Love Your Bandsaw!" or whatever articles that are in each issue of every woodworking magazine. I bet they even print them in Ranger Rick, if that's still printed.

The tracking mechanism is different. There are some fantastic threads here - someone will probably point them out. If not and you don't find them I'll look when I am back at the computer. Read and follow them.

I also suggest you get the dual bearing upgrade kit from Bill Mayo, he sells them on ebay or directly. I also put cool blocks on mine, but my guide blocks were abused.

Lastly, this was the first bandsaw I've actually owned, though not used. I didn't know about setting the fence for resawing to compensate for drift. Once I did that it made a big difference. I suspect that is something most know - I didn't.

Welcome!
Greenie (no serial #), 82 Mark V 500 serial #128648, ci bandsaw, old jigsaw, planer. All one buy in March 2014. Magna Jointer added Nov. '14. Speed reducer, conical disk and two bearing quill upgrade.

It opened for me in Microsoft Word. I changed orientation from portrait to landscape and it printed fine.
