Making Lamp Parts

For many years I have been making parts for our local lamp store. Their customers bring in objects that they want made into a lamp, so they call me to make the base or other wood parts. It is fun to work with the store, designing the lamps. We have made a lamp with a antique candle stick phone, a floor lamp with six wood shaft golf clubs, a table lamp with a small antique brass fire extinguisher and several with vases or other pottery. The links below show one of our latest creations. The wood is 1-1/2" thick Tulip Poplar and the finish is Transtint black dye/alcohol and four coats of wipe-on satin poly. The lamp is wired so that the meter dial turns when the light is on and there is a small 6 watt bulb inside, for a night light.

I'm not usually very creative in that way, but that got my juices flowing. So what would make a cool lamp object for me ... I just need the little light bulb over my head to turn on ...

This time of year, I can't help but think of a plastic woman's leg in a fishnet stocking lamp. If memory serves, that's a major award.

I like that concept! But the only way I can think to use them is to fill up one of the hollow glass lamp bases that they sell for seashells and such. Then again, I suppose that I could hot-glue a bunch of them into a structure (as long as the wife does the dusting. ) Either way, maybe it could incorporate a piece of turned buckeye burl. Got any other ideas?

You are the wood worker, so you can figure out how to do this , but wouldn't it be cool looking to have a column of "Buckeyes" sanded flat on top and bottom with both flats square and glued, drilled for the center conduit, and the "pupils" aligned in a spiral to the top with some kind of landing and have a footing at the bottom. The conduit would be the strength. I don't know if Buckeye wood is any good to work with, but make the base and the top landing out of Buckeye wood as well .....

Of course what do I know, I have only seen one "Buckeye". It was in an RV park in Terre Haute Ohio and I had to ask what it was LOL

Maybe you could call it the "All Seeing Buckeye Lamp"

Those ideas of lamp bases are truly inventive. Although the ideas may come from customers, the design and production are really inspirations.
