My Next Project

Why post a project that hasn't yet been started?
Answer: Because this project is so intimidating to me that I need the public possible embarrassment of not completing it. This is purely an ego thing, I know, but the impetus is needed. Please- bare with me

What is the project? It is a tall rocking chair inspired by the Sam Maloof's work.
It will be given to our Daughter-in-Law who is scheduled to give birth June 2015.

Here is a photo showing what it is supposed to look like when finished.

Are you planning on hand scooping the seat? Believe it or not there's a table saw jig that can make that double scoop. http://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodw ... rodgriguez

One of my woodworking friends built one of these jigs and says it works great.

Well Chuck that does look like it wood be quite challenging. But if anyone here could do it. It wood be YOU.

Good question! Didn't know how to scoop out the seat until receiving the plans. They call for sawing 5 boards and bandsawing appropriately, then gluing the 5 together using dowels or biscuits. After gluing, there will need to be shaping. They recommend a automobile grinder, or sander. When getting there, may buy a new draw knife.

I'll look seriously at that jig!!!

Yes it is!!! It usually takes me a couple of months to build a straight forward project like a chest with drawers. This one will require a lot of hand work with rasps and rifflers.

Who's plans are you going with? I have Hal Taylor's and they are a good set.I hope to make some of these chairs someday too. I've been considering trying to do all the shaping by hand without that noisey grinder. Maybe from Reclaimed Barn wood ,old growth timber.good luck with the project.I'll be following your progress.
