Mark 5 Greenie 1954 Refurbish

Post by redleg »

Bought a Greenie early this month for $80.00 and was able to spend a few days fixing it up. Replaced quill bearing, motor bearings, and Gilmer clutch drive bearings, drilled appropriate holes for floating sheave and control sheave, drilled access hole in back ( A headstock with 3/4 hp Franklin motor), cleaned lubed and painted. Other than a little bragging  the purpose of this topic was I found an easier way for me to clean the two rods on the caster assembly. I knocked the center point from a live lathe center and used it with a drill chuck to turn the rods. The rods set nicely in the concave area of the live center with pressure from the quill and chuck making sanding easy. Still looking for an age appropriate miter gauge and lower saw guard. I was going to make another shortie but haven't had the heart to cut it down.

Wow, looks really great! What kind of paint is that? I can't imagine it's spray paint... Also, $80 What a score!

Thanks for the kind words. The paint is from Lowes. Valspar Oil Gloss Enamel Anti-Rust Armor, B 4-83062 The light green color mix is 102-23, 107-21.5, 109-6, 113-1Y47. The dark green is 101-33.5, 103-16, 107-9.5, 113-1Y36. The light green color was scanned from underneath the rear Shopsmith name plate and the dark green was scanned from the lathe tool rest. Those two areas looked like they had faded the least. It was brushed on and works really well at above 60°F. Below that it was more likely to run. Too cold to paint outside and not enough room inside due to recent down-sizing. I saw the recommended Rustoleum Verde in another thread but it had to be special ordered by the case locally so that was out. I sent a picture to the previous owner also and he liked it.
