Installing 3" casters on Shopsmith

Post by kootfish »

There is a very accurate and easy way to install the new 3" casters on the Shopsmith Mark 5 without using a template. Remove the caster carriage from the right side by removing the four, 1/4" machine screws backed with square nuts, then pry off the 2" casters with a screwdriver and replace them with the new 3" casters. Pick up the right hand support frame and realign the caster carriage onto the frame with the carriage spider in the relaxed (support frame on the floor) position. Set the machine support fram back onto the floor. The grooves on each side of the caster carriage must align with the suport frame, but with the new casters on the floor. Use deep throat clamps to clamp the caster support frames on each side onto the saw table support. Get on the floor under the machine and drill through the top holes of the caster supports using a 1/4" drill on each side from the caster side through to the outside of the machine supports. Reinsert the 1/4" machine screws from outside to inside, add the lock washers and the square nuts and tighten them securely. Remove the deep throat clamps and repeat the drilling process through the bottom holes of each caster support.
