Cut the piece in half lengthwise. Cut a 1/8" dado in each piece for a 1/4" gap. Glue them together and glue a 1/8" piece on the back.
Another way is to cut the saw kerf on both sides and clean up the ends with the router.

Make the cut with a bandsaw, so it a thinner kerf.

Or, split it. No kerf, no show.
But the grain would need to be very straight.

I have been following this thread with interest.
Looking at the photo of the original key holder there is no evidence of it being cut and reglued.
The manufacturer would certainly want it done with a minimum steps/time.
I think roy_okc presented the best theory on how to procede in the second post in this thread.
Sooo, to provide proof of concept I spent about fifteen minutes in the shop with some scrap wood.
The wood is about 1 1/2" square, the slot produce is about 7 1/8" at the front and about 9" at the back and the keys fit in the slot.
I think we have a winner.

- Ripped the wood square, clamped it to the tablesaw fence and raised the blade (10") as far as it could go.

.I did try to cut the slot on the 10ER first, but with the 8" blade I didn't get enough blade exposure so I used my cheap table saw instead.
My other 10ER is set up as a dedicated drill press, and my Mk5 got stalled in restoration and is still awaiting reassembly

That is one solution.
I tried it as described in one of my posts but I was trying to avoid the cut going all the way through to the back side so my cut in the front was only about 7 inches wide and of course less as the slot deepens.
I'm still considering this method but leaning towards a router bit method that will give a cleaner slot.
Still lots of time, Christmas is 11 months away. Oh yeah, it was supposed to be for this Christmas.

PS: The blank I am planning on using will be about 1 5/8" thick by 12" long and 3" wide, probably walnut.

Ah, I love this idea! My wife loses her keys ALL THE TIME. To the point I put up a contraption that wouldn't let her in until she hung her keys on it and the weight made it pivot out of the way. Of course it was not met with enthusiastic appreciation and didn't last long
I have managed to get her using the simple ugly screw hook in the wall. I haven't been inspired to make a decent one until now. I like the simplicity.
