Spindle Knob Question

Post by rmbishow »

I am new to SS. In setting up my SS, I have secured the Spindle knob properly on the quill and it seems fine. However, it occurs to me that I don't know it's function. More importantly, I don't know if the spindle knob should be in place on the quill for every SS operation or if there are any operation modes where it should be removed? Any help with this newbe question would be appreciated. Thanks, Rick

Welcome to the forum!

"Spindle knob" isn't a term that I've seen before, but I have a hunch you're referring to a knob that mounts on the auxiliary (back) end of the spindle. If so, this writeup from Shopsmith about their "Quill Twister" accessory should shed some light on it's purpose. I know that some people have turned their own knobs from wood, leaving them mounted on a 3" faceplate.

Assuming the spindle knob is the knurled collar, since it has it's set screw covered with hard putty to prevent unintentional loosening of it, the answer is actually "It should never be removed except when disassembling the quill".

I see Dennis assumed the opposite end!

I am indeed referring to a part designated on the parts list (#65 on page B-7 of the manual) as a "spindle knob". Mine was a loose piece when I purchased my SS second hand. It is indeed the knurled collar you refer to with a set screw. I appreciate your information. Since it was not fastened to the quill when I brought it home, I was not sure if it was removable for certain operations. Again, many thanks for the reply. Rick

I neglected to mention the(a?) purpose of the collar/knob. It serves to reduce/eliminate end play of the quill shaft and bearing. When installing it, the shaft should be pulled out, and the 'collar' pressed in. That brings the shaft step tight against the inside on the inner bearing race, and the collar tight against the outer end of the inner race. The bearing is held in place in the quill by an internal step and a retaining ring visible just inside the collar. Since it is never(rarely) used as a knob . . . to me it is a collar! ;)

P.S. Notice there is a separate tapered flat for that set screw. Make sure to center the 'knob' on the flat by rocking the set screw wrench as it is tightened.

OK, one more question in this regard. I would like to fill the set screw hole with some kind of puddy, so as to not unintentionally loosen or remove this Spindle Knob/Knurled collar". I saw this mentioned in a service video and a prodict called "Akempucky" was used by SS to fill the set screw hole. This product is no long in production or available. Any suggestion as to what specific puddy I should use to fill this set screw hole on the Spindle Knob/"knurled collar" located on the Quill shaft. Thanks. Rick

Any thing will do, but it must be easily(relatively)removed when needed. Putty is not around any more, but glazing compound will work. Main thing is to 'hide' the hex socket wrench hole.

Nick had a habit of calling any crud that was hard and stubborn to remove "akumpucky".

Oh sorry. Did not see your reply.

Glazing compound sounds like a good alternative. If needed, you just dig and scrape it out of there?
