Jointer bearings???

Update: problem fixed the cutter head was out of alignment. Also the hubs were not aligned. thanks for all the input, very helpful.

re my comment made earlier -- Alignment can hardly be an issue. The jointer bearings fit into the left and right bearing housings (#28 and #29) which are in turn mounted and secured in machined groves in the jointer casting and thus are "self aligning". . Please explain. How was the cutter head out of alignment (alignment with what) and what did you do to correct it?

Either bearings cocked in the blocks or the blocks cocked in the 'grooves'???

Dusty, the bearings and pillow blocks are self aligning but not the blocks to the table. All I did was loosen the bolts to the cutter head and aligned it. I really thought earlier that the bolts and the pillow blocks were self aligning that is what fool me till I really looked that the cutter in respect to the infeed table. No more clicking and no more heating up.

Back in the days when mounting tubes were straight, those sloppy holes in the base were what allowed 'lateral' alignment to the headstock.

I did not realize they were capable of causing your click/heat problem.

I hope that I remember this when I next need to know. I have had the cutter head out only once in the twenty plus years that I have had a jointer.
